Smoke Alarms

Smoke Detectors

Smoke alarms can help you keep you and your family safe in the time of a fire. Smoke alarms can be true lifesavers for you and your family. In addition, carbon monoxide alarms are still an evolving technology. There has been a lot of debate among safety groups, the National Gas Association, and several testing agencies as to just how effective they are. Many problems come from the fact that nearby traffic or power plants can increase the carbon monoxide levels outside, which naturally can then increase your carbon monoxide levels inside.

Smoke alarms should be located in central areas around your house and should be mounted high on your wall or ceiling. Everyone in your house should know how to recognize the sound of smoke alarms, and you should make sure none of your smoke alarms are near any doors, windows, or vents. You should clean your smoke alarms at least once a year, but make sure you check the batteries in your smoke alarms more frequently. You should also at least have one carbon monoxide detector in your home, and you should check it regularly. You should also know what the carbon monoxide alarm sounds like and what to do if it is triggered.

Everyone in your family should also know at least two ways to get out of every room, when your smoke alarms go off. All of your upstairs rooms should have roll-up or fold-up ladders or other ways to escape, and everyone should know that if a fire breaks out they should feel all doors before opening them. Smoke alarms truly can save lives in your family’s home.
