Pool Alarms

Pool alarms can be used for two purposes. The first being to alert the homeowner that there is something or someone inside the pool, the other can alert the homeowner that there is a fire or other emergency near or around the pool area.

Parents who have small children should have a swimming pool alarm whether they have an in ground or above ground pool. Drowning is the number one cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 2 years old. Drownings happen everyday in the US and other countries, and even when death is not the result, near drowning causes severe mental and physical handicaps that can and do alter a child’s life forever. This is why that it is imperative that parents with young children take responsibility for the safety of their children and the other children in the neighborhood by keeping their pools safe.

Floating pool alarms are so simple to use that there is no excuse as to why not to take the few seconds to keep your pool safe. This type of swimming pool alarm works by simple turning it on and throwing it in the water. One should be careful to check the square footage the is covered by the alarm. If your pool is very large, you may need to have two pool alarms in the water.

The other type of swimming pool alarm systems that are available are those that attach to the side of the pool. These are typically more expensive but tend to me more sensitive. These are only used for in ground pools.

Both the floating pool alarms and the attached pool alarms work by detecting when anything about a certain number of pounds breaks the surface of the water. A loud alarm sounds that, on a good system, can be heard inside the house and, on an even better system alerts the police.

Whether you have an above ground or an inground pool, you should have it fenced. In most states it is required by law that the pool area be enclosed. Pool fence alarms are available for very little money. The most simple of the fence alarms works by a magnet system and can be purchased for less than $10.00. More sophisticated systems, such as a wireless entry alarm which requires professional installation can run upwards of a few hundred dollars with a monthly fee.

There are also alarms that can be placed around the pump area to alert the homeowner of a fire in the area. These are important as well since the fire could easily spread to your home.

Pool safety alarms are of the utmost importance for keeping your children safe. Remember that toddlers look at a pool and see pretty blue water and never the danger that surrounds them. Parents tend to believe that a drowning can never happen to them, but that is certainly not the case. I buried my 19 month old in 2005 due to an accidental drowning that would have been prevented with a simple pool alarm.
