Determining your budget for the right motion sensors is an important step in improving the security around your home. Your options for motion sensors and alarm systems are numerous. Your first choice may be to decide whether to use wired or wireless motion sensors. Wireless alarm systems are usually easy to install yourself, require less physical changes to your home and offer most of the features you can find on hard-wired systems. Door and window motion sensors cost about $20 each. Monitored motion sensors can trigger audible alarms and contact the programmed numbers whenever your alarms are triggered.

When you’re determining which motion sensors to buy, you can use motion sensors that sound within the premises when triggered by someone going through a door or window. You can also consider motion sensors that go off when someone is around or within the house. Audible motion sensors can cost anywhere from $30 to $50 each. These motion sensors can be effective, but you have to depend on the neighbors or someone passing by to hear the alarm and call police. Many people use audible motion sensors to supplement the alarm systems in really large houses, or when they want alarms to be heard in outbuildings or guest houses.

Another version of motion sensors is a telephone dialer self-monitored system. When the system is triggered, the dialer automatically dials four telephone numbers that you’ve programmed into the unit. When the call is answered, the system plays a prerecorded message for help. Continually monitored motion sensors are somewhat more reliable than a telephone dialer, because it will trigger even if your phone lines go down. When the alarm is triggered, an audible alarm sounds, and the security service’s monitoring center dispatches police to your home. You’ll need to check with your local electronics stores about different prices on different systems.

You should be able to buy motion sensors to guard two windows and a hallway for about $150 or so. If you want to install your own monitored motion sensors, you can buy the basic setup for about $130, with extra door and window monitors costing $20 or less.
