Fire Alarms

Fire Alarm

When you’re installing fire alarms in your home, you should teach your entire family how they work and what the plan is. Everyone should know that when fire alarms sound, they should drop and crawl to move through smoke. You’ll have about 12-inches of breathable air on the bottom of the floor. Everyone should also know not to hide if a fire breaks out and the fire alarms sound, and they shouldn’t go back inside the house for any reason.

You should draw up an official family fire escape plan that everyone understands when there’s a fire. You can do an official escape plan pretty easily. Just draw up a rough floor plan of your home or apartment. Use a colored pen to note doors, windows, big pieces of furniture, and fire extinguishers. Then use a red pen to draw a couple of escape routes from each room. Draw a plan for each floor, and then go over it with your kids a few times each year to make sure they understand how to escape if the fire alarms sound.

Fire Alarms

When your fire alarms sound, all your children and family members should know how to get out. If you think about putting all the basic fire-safety practices in place, you realize that it doesn’t take a whole lot of work. No matter what types of systems you layer on top of your fire-safety foundation, the practices your family learns are the most important steps toward making sure your house and property is protected from danger during a house fire.

It’s important to note that fire safety is a fundamental part of a home security plan. Good fire alarms include basic tools and practices. You’ll want to make sure your fire alarms are in good working order. You should check them a couple times a year—and check the batteries in them even more often—to make sure your fire alarms work properly.

Fire Alarm Systems

You should also have your stoves, chimneys, heaters, and electrical equipment maintained properly to prevent fires, and everyone should know that the certain rules for fire-safe behavior like how to recognize the sound of fire alarms and how to call 911. Every member of your home should also understand how to use fire extinguishers. Fire alarms are incredibly important in protecting you and your family from injury and death in a fire. Your escape plan should be established and practiced regularly. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, you should have an escape plan and make sure that everyone in your home knows how to get out when the fire alarms sound.
